Coronavirus – Protecting Your Family

Here’s a quick guide to how Bailey’s Floor Care are helping clients prepare for Corvid-19 (Coronavirus).

First, here are the basic facts about Covid-19.

The virus that causes the disease is SARS-CoV-2.  The “SARS” part of the name refers to the name of the new coronavirus’ genetic link to the virus that caused the 2003 SARS outbreak and Covid-19 is the specific strain of Coronavirus.  Corvid-19 is the name given to it by the World Health Organization and stands for “Co” refers to corona, “vi” to virus and “d” to disease).

The Coronavirus is a basic ‘enveloped’ virus.  The virus is enclosed by a lipid membrane (a fat-like substance).  This membrane (envelope) is used by the virus to attach itself to the host cell, the virus then penetrates the host cell and replicates itself.  The envelope is quite fragile and susceptible to change in temperature, pH levels and disinfectants.

Examples of Enveloped Viruses are:

Chicken Pox
Influenza A
Hepatitis B
And, of course, Coronavirus

Like most enveloped viruses, outside of the human body they are very weak and easily destroyed with hot water and disinfectant (hence the Health Authorities advice to wash your hands with soap and water!).

Needless to say, you cannot kill viruses so easily once they are inside the human body and we rely on our immune system to take care of that.  But we can control them through prevention by keeping viruses at bay.  By making your homes safe for your family and friends you’ll have a safe haven to retreat to.

Look after yourselves.  There are various agents that are effective against enveloped viruses, the best one being bleach, but you can’t go splashing that stuff around your home, especially on your soft furnishings and carpets!

The most well-known version is alcohol, such as in hand sanitisers.  It works very quickly but it evaporates so how long it lasts is limited.  The best thing is good old soap and water!  So why does soap work so well on the coronavirus and indeed most viruses? The short story is because the weakest link of the virus is the lipid (fatty) bilayer and soap dissolves the fat membrane causing the virus to fall apart like a house of cards.  So, you can see that it’s good to clean!  Without the lipid bilayer the virus dies or rather, we should say it becomes inactive as viruses aren’t really alive.

Viruses can be active outside the body for hours, even days.  Disinfectants, liquids, wipes, gels and creams containing alcohol are all useful at getting rid of them – but they are not quite as good as normal soap.

The killer ingredient in soaps are QAT’s (or Quaternary Ammonium Compounds).  QAT’s take longer to work but provide longer lasting protection.  They disrupt the envelope membrane, which exposes the Nucleocapsid, affecting its ability to infect subsequent cells.

The great thing about QAT’s is that you can use them on pretty much all surfaces – Your skin, doors, work surfaces, white goods, any wet cleanable fabrics and hard surfaces.

It’s good to clean. At Bailey’s Floor Care we’re going the extra mile to help you

  1. We won’t take advantage of the current crisis. We’ll sanitise everything we clean by using products containing QAT’s to kill viruses. We’ll do this as part of our service.  It’s good to clean.
  2. Our technicians are all fully certified IICRC technicians, so they know how to thoroughly deep clean your carpets, rugs, furniture and hard floors.
  3. None of our technicians have been outside of the UK in the last six months, let alone to the hot spots of Coronavirus – so they are safe and healthy! None of our team are showing any symptoms of the Covid-19 virus. We’re monitoring them!
  4. We’ll all wash our hands on a frequent basis using soap and warm water or with our Eco Spotter to kill any germs and viruses that we may encounter.
  5. We’ll respect your space through social distancing. We’ll keep a minimum of one meter apart from you. We won’t shake your hand.  Don’t take it personally, we still love you!  It’s better to be safe than sorry.
  6. We’ll all practice respiratory hygiene in accordance with the World Heath Organisations recommendations. Don’t worry if our technicians cough. We all need to cough at some point.  What’s important is how we cough and that’s into a tissue or bent elbow.
  7. We’ll wear disposable gloves whilst we’re working in your home to ensure there’s no transfer to or from hard surfaces such as door handles and furniture etc.
  8. We’ll take our rubbish away with us. It may well only be a pair of gloves or some tissue etc but it’s important for us to keep personal contact items isolated.
  9. We’ll dispose of all wastewater from cleaning your furnishings responsibly, down the sewer line at our office. That way it’ll be chemically treated at the sewage plant.
  10. We will leave you a complimentary bottle of our Virus & Bacteria Eliminator – it’s an environmentally friendly, child & pet safe, 100% natural and is made from plant extracts. It’s an anti-microbial that protects against many viruses, bacteria, mould and fungus. Spray this regularly onto your hands and hard surfaces to protect you and your family.

Here’s what the World Health Organisation says about the Coronavirus…

Wash your hands frequently – Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.  Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain social distancing – Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain the virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouthWhy? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene – Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.  Why? Droplets spread the virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early – Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority. Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent the spread of viruses and other infections.
Stay informed and follow the advice given by your healthcare provider

Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow the advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.

To get your carpets, rugs, furniture and hard floors sanitised call now on 01530 215 036 or fill out our contact form and we’ll call you – Click Here.  Don’t forget – it’s good to clean!  Stay safe.
